Virologists are Medical specialists responsible for infectious disease on virology-enabled stations. You diagnose infections with swabs and blood panels, prepare treatments and vaccines in the Virology lab, keep contaminated spaces contained, and escalate outbreaks through the CMO.

Virology mechanics run on stations such as Cork and Saltern regardless of game mode. IPCs and cyborgs cannot carry biological pathogens and do not suffer allergies.

Duties

  1. Report directly to the Chief Medical Officer.
  2. Sit immediately below Surgeons in medical seniority for coordination, but do not supervise Surgeons (and Surgeons do not need Virologist playtime).
  3. Collect samples (swabs and blood), diagnose, prepare culture/vaccines, contain pathogens, and report outbreaks.
  4. Maintain chain-of-custody for samples and vaccines. Label samples with patient identity, time, and sample type whenever practical.
  5. Use PPE appropriate to the pathogen risk. Full bio suit and hood for airborne or unknown high-risk work. Surgical masks and sterile nitrile gloves are mandatory for routine patient sampling and any observation of surgery with open wounds.
  6. Sterilize or discard contaminated tools, gloves, and PPE between patients. Use the paired sterilization chamber when leaving contaminated spaces.
  7. Prepare your own antiviral, antibiotic (ceftriaxone), specialized antiviral (ribavirin), antipyretic, sterilant, and allergy medications using the chemistry equipment in the Virology laboratory.
  8. Do not deliberately release live pathogens outside authorized sealed testing environments. Suspected bioterror activity must be reported to the CMO and Security — see Bioterrorist.

For full diagnosis, pathogen reference, vaccines, and decontamination steps, see Virology SOP. For quarantine and Code Violet policy, see Medical SOP.
